Frank A. Verley of Marquette, Michigan entered his eternal rest on Friday morning July 12, 2013 at age of 79 in his home after a long battle with cancer.

Frank was born Frank Alwin Verley on December 18, 1933 in Kingston, Jamaica to Louise P. and Albert C. Verley. His pursuit of higher education led him to Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, University of Connecticut where he received his BS degree in Genetics, University of Illinois, Champagne where he obtained his MS and PhD in Genetics and finally a Post-Doctoral in Radiation Genetics at the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratories in Argonne, Ill. He was both a scholar and athlete and received scholarships for track as well as played excellent soccer. Among his favorite sports were soccer and horse racing.

Frank Verley retired from Northern Michigan University in 2005 as Emeritus Professor after a 38 year career in the Department of Biology. He was actively engaged in research (where he has had many publications), teaching, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. He was a wonderful mentor and friend to numerous students and colleagues; many of whom had achieved great success in their professional lives as physicians, dentists, researchers, professors, technologists, pharmacists, educators and various practicing professionals and who largely have never forgotten Frank's guidance, inspiration and support. He worked selflessly for students, for his department and for the university at large. He enjoyed live music and so one might find him at a local establishment where live music was being held and where he could be assured he would likely connect with former students. His keen intellect, teasing sense of humor, warm personality, genuine interest and insight into people, positive attitude, incredible kindness and ever present desire for self-improvement marks him a rare but truly treasured human being. He will be forever remembered and missed by all who knew him and loved him.

Frank was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dr. D. Roberta Verley (whom he cared for during her long term battle with illness), his brother Dermott O. Verley, and his parents. He is survived by brothers Glaister Verley and Milton Verley, sisters Enid Witter and Ethel Witter (all of whom reside in Florida), and step-daughter Avec Langridge (from New York) as well as several nieces and nephews.

Upon Frank's request, there will be no memorial services. The Canale-Tonella Funeral Home is assisting the family where memories may be shared at canalefuneral.com
