Robert L. Sligh, 82, of Marquette, died peacefully Saturday evening, December 10, 2016 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans with his wife by his side and also under the care of Lake Superior Hospice. He was born October 15, 1934 in Newberry, South Carolina and was raised there. Robert served in the US Air Force as a fuel specialist at various bases throughout the world including Thailand, Japan, and Spain. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War and retired in 1976 following 23 years of service. Robert then was employed as manager at the former Ranch Steak & Seafood Restaurant; he owned and operated Sligh's Place in Gwinn; and then as a fuel specialist for Boreal Aviation. He married Joan Sadowy in Marquette in March of 1989 and again on December 1998. He was a member of the Gwinn Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce and served breakfast for the UP 200. His interests included hunting and trips to the casino. Robert is survived by his wife, Joan Sligh of Marquette; five children; two step-children, James (Laverne) Santangelo of Rochester, MI and Lisa Davis of Ft. Myers, FL; three grandchildren, James, Cameron and Marie Santangelo. He was preceded in death by his parents. Per Robert's wishes, there will be no services at this time.
