Richard K. "Dick" Cleary, 62, of Marquette, a dear husband, father, papa, brother and friend, left us too soon on Saturday August 27, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. Dick was born in Hancock, Michigan on September 8, 1953 to the late Richard G. and Kay Jane (Jamison) Cleary. He grew up in Ontonagon and spent much of his time at the Porcupine Mountains State Park, where his grandfather Knox Jamison served as Park Manager. He graduated from Ontonagon Area High School in 1971 and was active in many sports as well as Ontonagon Mountaineers Drum & Bugle Corps. Upon graduation he enlisted and served in the U.S. Army Infantry Division, stationed in Germany. On July 17, 1976 he married Margaret "Peggy" Vezzetti at Holy Family Catholic Church in Ontonagon. At age 21, Richard began his career at Cleveland Cliffs (Empire & Tilden) and served as USWA 4974 Safety Committee Co-Chairman and Grievance Officer. Rick could always be counted on to show up, and walk in a parade to pass out candy to the kids. He retired from the Tilden in 2014, after almost 40 years of service. As an avid sports fan, Richard enjoyed playing, coaching, and watching his favorite teams; the Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Steelers and Michigan Wolverines. He was an avid downhill skier from a very young age and took many trips out west and throughout the U.P. to ski with friends and family. During the summer months, he golfed in local leagues and was a staple at the Ontonagon Labor Day Lake Superior shootout. As a classic car enthusiast, Richard frequently traveled to Iola, Wisconsin for the annual car show with close friends. He was a volunteer Track & Field coach for many years at Father Marquette Schools. As a member of both Marquette and Ishpeming Men's Pool leagues, he won numerous league championships with his teams in addition to the 2010-2011 MVP Award in the Marquette league. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Peggy Cleary of Marquette; two daughters, Katie (Ed) Miller of Waterford Township, MI and their children, Lucy and Rosie Miller, also Kelly (Josh Carlson) Cleary of Marquette and her son, Kai Cleary; five brothers, Ronald (Ann) Cleary of Ontonagon, Russ Cleary of Whitmore Lake, MI, Steven (Melissa) Cleary of Rhinelander, WI, Scott (Trisha) Cleary of Ontonagon, and Gerald (Theresa) Cleary of Sugar Camp, WI; also surviving are several dear nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death besides his parents was a sister, Jennifer Cleary and an infant brother, Joseph Cleary. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 1st at 12:30 p.m. in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home with Deacon Gregg St. John officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. A luncheon will take place in the funeral home immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Father Marquette Schools, 500 S. Fourth St., Marquette, MI 49855 in Richard's memory. Richard's family would like to extend a special thank you to his brother, Russ Cleary, whom he referred to as his "guardian angel" throughout his treatments at U of M Hospital in Ann Arbor. Additionally we would like to thank U.P. Home Health & Hospice for their compassionate care as well as dear family and friends for their love, prayers and support during this difficult time.
