Orval O. “Oakie” Lindeman, 69, of Gwinn, died Wednesday morning, March 22, 2017 at UP Health System- Marquette. 

Oakie was born on August 3, 1947 in Stronach, Michigan to the late Leonard and Mildred (Leavitt) Lindeman. He was a 1965 graduate of Manistee High School.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he spent his career, retiring from active military in 1985 as a fire inspector.  Oakie then worked in the same capacity as a civil servant at the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base until its closure in 1995.  He also worked as fire chief for Boreal Aviation for a few years before joining Red Fox Run Golf Course where he worked as a ranger for several seasons. 

Oakie received the Fireman of the Year Award in 1976 for meritorious service in saving the lives of fellow fire fighters during a fire at K.I. Sawyer. 

Oakie was a life member of Gwinn VFW Post #5670.  He enjoyed golfing, bowling, wood-working, and playing cards. 

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Dixie, whom he married on May 20, 1967 at Orlando Air Force Base; two daughters, Becky Lindeman Keskimaki and Peggy Lindeman, both of Gwinn; two sisters, Dee Dee (Ronald) Sonnenberg of Stronach, MI and Denise Lindeman of Yuma, AZ; nieces and nephews, Dwayne (Bonnie) Lindeman of Kaleva, MI, Todd (Jennifer) Sonnenberg of Jackson, MI and Hope Sonnenberg of Bear Lake MI; also an aunt, Isabelle Lindeman of Manistee, MI.  Preceding him in death besides his parents was a brother, Earl Emil Lindeman; nieces, Kimberly and Kerry Lindeman and a nephew, Leonard John Lindeman

The Lindeman family will greet relatives and friends beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning at the Canale Gwinn Funeral Home where a memorial service will be held in the funeral home at 12 noon Saturday with the Rev. Rell Spickerman officiating.  A light luncheon will be served in the funeral home immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gwinn-Sawyer Veterinary Clinic, 408 Avenue A, Gwinn, MI  49841 in Oakie’s memory.
