Nicholas Azio Gualazzi, age 90 1901 Division Street, Marquette passed away peacefully on Monday, July 24, 2017 with his loving family at his side and in the care of Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice. Nick was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on December 6, 1926 to Adolpho and Rose (Paris) Gualazzi. He proudly served his country during World War II- first with the US Merchant Marines in the South Pacific and later with the US Army in the European Theatre. After the war, Nick married his childhood sweetheart Carmena Fazi on February 1, 1947 at St Mary's Catholic Church in Sault Ste. Marie. They would enjoy 67 years of marriage and a busy life raising their family of four children: Judy, Nick Jr., Susan and Tony. Nick was hired as a State Farm Insurance agent in Sault Ste. Marie in 1964 and in 1967 he was promoted to District Manager and moved to Marquette. Nick was very proud of his district and helped many agents with their careers throughout his 28 years with State Farm. He will be remembered for his loyalty to the company and his strong work ethic. Carmen worked with him in his office and they made many lifelong friends and traveled throughout the country finally retiring in 1991. Following that they enjoyed 17 winters in Florida. During his lifetime Nick also enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, traveling, reading and golfing. Nick and Carmen were kept busy with their four children and eventually their 8 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. They attended their grandchildren's sporting events and activities faithfully and enjoyed many family dinners where they shared their delicious Italian cooking. Big holiday gatherings were celebrated with family each year. Nick was also a lifelong avid Detroit Tiger and Green Bay Packer fan. He will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him for his wisdom and kindness, his sense of humor and his integrity, his humble nature and his smile. In his later years Nick enjoyed meeting with his coffee groups and sharing his life stories with his grandchildren who were his pride and joy. He was proud to be a part of the Honor Flight in 2012. He attended St Louis the King Catholic Church where he had many close friends. Nick was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post 44. He was a lifetime member of the Christopher Columbus Society in Sault Ste. Marie. Nick is survived by his four children, Judy (Ronnie) Morgan of Marquette and their sons Dylan (Ellen Dully) of Portland, OR, Michael (Jaclyn) Morgan and daughter Ava of Elkhart, IN, Nicholas Jr. (Kristine) of Marquette and their children Nick Gualazzi of Marquette, Annabel Gualazzi of Los Angeles , CA, Christina (fiancé Matthew Goldman) Gualazzi of Los Angeles, CA and Paloma Caskey of Portland, OR; Susan (Geoff) Weston of Marquette and their children Geoffrey (Katie) Weston and expected great grandson of Portland, OR, Tony Weston of Rico, CO, Nicholas Weston of Marietta, GA; Tony (Kellie) Gualazzi of Bloomington, IL and Nick's brother, David Gualazzi of Onawa, IA Nick was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years Carmena in 2014, his parents Adolpho and Rose, his sister Barbara and brother Adolpho, Jr. Visitation will be held at St Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey on Friday from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 am. A luncheon will follow in Father Gauthier Hall after which time Nick will be laid to rest in the Holy Cross Cemetery. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living where Nick resided for the last year and half. Memorials are preferred to Bay Cliff Health Camp, PO Box 310, Big Bay, MI 49808 in Nick’s memory. “At the end of life what really matters is not what we bought, but what we built; not what we got, but what we shared, not our competence, but our character; and not our success, but our significance. Live a life that matters. Live a life of love.” Author unknown. The Canale-Tonella Funeral Home is assisting the Gualazzi family where memories may be shared at canalefuneral.com
