Martin F. May, 93, of Marquette, formerly of Saginaw, died Friday afternoon, January 13, 2017 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had resided since October of 2005. He moved to Marquette in 2004. Martin was born on April 13, 1923 in Columbus, Ohio, a son of Michael and Rosina (Topper) May. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Marines during World War II, seeing action at Iwo Jima, Saipan and the Volcano Islands. He was retired from the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department. Martin was a lifelong member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Saginaw. Survivors include three children, Pamela (Kenneth) Chant of Marquette, Martin (Sheryl) May of Mason and Richard (DeEtta McCallum) May of Saginaw; 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild; also many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Jacqueline Sherman May who he married on April 14, 1953; two daughters, Kathryn Smith and Jeanette Godbout; a sister, Betty Rody and brothers, Michael, George, Carl and John May. A memorial service will be held at the Wakeman Funeral Home, 1218 N. Michigan Ave., Saginaw, MI at a later date and will be announced. Burial will take place in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Saginaw. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activities Fund, 425 Fisher St., Marquette, MI 49855 or to a charity of the donor's choice in Mr. May's memory. The May family would like to thank Dr. Larry Skendzel and the staff at Jacobetti for all of their kindness and caring for Martin and the family over the years he was a resident there, especially during his last days.
