John J. Blemberg, 99, of 1513 Lincoln Ave., died peacefully Tuesday morning April 4, 2017 with family by his side. He was born on January 20, 1918 in Marquette, the son of late John F. and Elizabeth S. (VanPaar) Blemberg, and was a lifelong resident. He was a graduate of Bishop Baraga High School and a member of St. Peters Cathedral. John was employed as a switchman for the L.S.& I. Railroad for most of his working years retiring at the age of 63. He served for three years in World War II serving 32 months with the 432nd Bombardment Squadron with battles and campaigns in Sicily, Naples, Rome, Algeria, Morocco, and Southern France. After the war ended and without taking any leave, he was honorably discharged on September 19, 1945. His decorations and citations included the Good Conduct medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 9 Bronze Stars and 1 Bronze Arrowhead, and the Croix De Guerre with Palm. He loved spending time visiting and traveling with his family. With his granddaughters that he adored and affectionally called the “twins” he spent countless hours watching game shows, enduring soap operas, being a chauffeur, playing salon, making snowmen, grilling his signature potatoes, dancing in the kitchen, and watching baseball games, dance recitals and ice shows. John enjoyed card games, his late-night snacks of ice cream, swimming classes at NMU and playing with the family dog Bella Bear. His sense of humor and strong family values were his greatest traits. He is survived by his son, John W. (Janine R.) Blemberg, both of Marquette; two granddaughters, Jessica (Scot) Pekarek and Allison (Adam) Duerr; and two great-grandsons Niko and Boden Pekarek all from Minneapolis, MN; his brother Ronald (Kay) Blemberg and sister Margaret (William) Nystrom both living in Sun City, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years Betty J.(Pohl) Blemberg and sibling brothers Peter, Frank, Joseph, and Alphonse Blemberg and Edward and George Voet; sibling sisters Marie Hokenson, Evangeline Rosewall, Leona Kevern, Frilda Bertrand, Ann Cook, and Jeanette Pascoe. A family memorial service at the grave site will be held over the Memorial Day weekend on May 27th for both John and Betty at the Park Cemetery. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider both the U.P. Home Health & Hospice and the UPAWS organizations in his memory. The Canale-Tonella Funeral Home is assisting John’s family. The obituary can also be viewed at www.canalefuneral.com where relatives and friends may leave a note or remembrance.
