Ivan T. Soyring, 74, of Gwinn, passed away Sunday morning, November 20, 2016 at his residence in the comfort of his family and under the care of U.P. Home Health and Hospice. Ivan was born on August 21, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of the late Theodore and Lenore (Pilon) Soyring and was a nearly lifelong resident of Gwinn where he attended Gwinn High School. He served in the Army National Guard from 1961-1968.While in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he won special awards for his marksmanship. Ivan worked at several Gwinn businesses such as; Negrinelli's Ford Garage, Little Lake Gas Station & Repair, Joes Standard, for Don Nyquist, Sr. & Mussatto's IGA. He later worked at Lake Shore as a mechanic, at the Empire Mine and retired from Forsyth Township as Superintendent of Public Works in January of 1998 after 24 years of service. An avid outdoorsman, Ivan enjoyed hunting, fishing and shooting. Last year sadly he earned the name of "Black Cloud" for not catching fish with his friend, Ron Kangas. He won many awards & shooting championships over the years in trap & skeet and has been a member of the Negaunee Rod & Gun Club for years. In his free time, Ivan enjoyed woodworking and many friends were so lucky to be given his "post office" banks and jewelry boxes. Ivan was known to be a very good mechanic and "Jack of all Trades" who was called upon for help and advice to fix or repair just about anything. He was a generous soul who helped so many people under many different circumstances. He will be missed by the many friends he made over his lifetime. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, the former Jeanne Korpi whom he married on July 13, 1968 at Suomi Location; two sisters, Susan (Michael) Pelkola and Laverne (Gary) White, both of Gwinn; two brothers, Glen (Patsy) Soyring of Gwinn and Alan (Cindy) Soyring of McFarland; also surviving are his brother-in-law, Jake (Judy) Korpi of Wayne, MI, sisters-in-law Joyce (Clem Anderson) Peterson, Negaunee and Sally Marjonen of Gwinn and many nieces and nephews. His family would like to thank his special friends, especially Gigi "Fifi" Nyquist (as Ivan called her). Thanks to Patty Umbarger, Sherry Juidici and Dale Welch for caregiving; Pete Bianchi, Bruce Valima and Roy Meni for the many hilarious trips for treatment. With their help Ivan was able to stay in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family and friends. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Canale Gwinn Funeral Home with the Rev. Allen Mott officiating. The Soyring family will greet relatives and friends beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the service in the funeral home. A luncheon will be served at Grace Lutheran Church in Gwinn directly following the service. Spring burial will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery.
