Ellen G. Alanen, 84, of Marquette, died Thursday morning, May 18, 2017 at U.P. Health System-Marquette after a short illness. Ellen was born on March 17, 1933 in Mass City, Michigan, a daughter of the late John and Helmi (Martin) Kulppi and was a 1951 graduate of Mass High School. Ellen was formerly employed by Michigan Consolidated Gas Company in Detroit, was a civilian employee of the United States Air Force in Detroit, and worked as a building secretary for the Howell Public Schools for 18 years. Ellen also worked as an assembly technician for Kelsey-Hayes Corporation in Brighton, retiring in April of 1999. In her free time, Ellen enjoyed sewing, handwork, picking blueberries and gardening. She was an avid swimmer and was also a faithful member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Harvey. Survivors include two children, Robin (Larry) Mosher of Galesburg, MI and Thomas (Jean) Alanen of Mass City; two grandchildren, Liisa and Matthew Mosher; siblings, Evelyn (Bill) Raatikka of Bruce Crossing, Jane (Marvin) Westerdahl of Lakeland, FL and Dale Kulppi of Ontonagon; brother-in-law, Reino Alanen of Bruce Crossing and sister-in-law, Evelyn Alanen of Marquette; also several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents was her husband, Eino Alanen on January 13, 2003 as well as two brothers, Clifford and Eino Kulppi. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Harvey with the Rev. James Duehring officiating. The Alanen family will greet relatives and friends beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the service at the church. A luncheon will take place in the church hall immediately following. Burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Bruce Crossing. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 555 Riverside Drive, Marquette, MI 49855, Wainola Lutheran Church, 26553 Mud Creek Road, Mass City, MI 49948 or to the Finnish Center Association, 35200 W. 8 Mile Road, Farmington Hills, MI 48335 in Ellen’s memory.
