Eliza Madeline Gort, 7, of Gwinn - under the guidance of the waning moon and the peak of the Perseids meteor showers - crossed the rainbow bridge to reunite with her sisters Gwendolyn Willow and Gabrielle Sophia, while in the loving care of her parents and her sister, Violet, Sunday, August 13, 2017. Born February 26, 2010, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, daughter of Timothy and Regina (Papaleo) Gort, "Liza Bean Ball, the BOSS" touched the lives of so many people. She joined her family on many adventures across the nation and at home, in the U.P. She particularly enjoyed snow sledding and riding her bicycle, in addition to spending time with her sisters no matter where they were. In May 2017, she spent a month in Florida with her family (including Miranda Badour, Tricia Vocasek and Jonathan LaFonde), where she squealed with joy while riding a golf cart on the beach, laughing loudly as she rode a pontoon boat searching for dolphins and manatees, and smiled widely while boogie boarding on ocean waves. She enjoyed being read to, swimming in her indoor pool and watching the PBS series: Daniel Tiger. Her favorite movies were Frozen and Trolls. During her final months, Eliza spent time receiving “Wish Weeks” from her parents, caregivers and friends. She enjoyed a private screening of the movie Trolls that also featured the special guest “Poppy Troll.” Next, she went on an amazing trolley adventure with Daniel Tiger and all her loving friends. Finally, a fairy party was held for her with Queen Honeysuckle (Deborah Choszczyk) and Fairy Paprika at the Carp River Gardens where a magical time was had by all. Her radiance was enjoyed by a loving group of people and she was meticulously cared for by so many (Rachel James, Mary Jo Wilson, Krysta Daly, Miranda, Carli Chaudier, Lindsay Dewys and many more), and teachers (Cathy Langereis, Jane Heinzmann). Surviving are her parents, Tim and Regina Gort of Gwinn, MI; her sister, Violet; maternal grandparents, Carol Papaleo of Marquette, MI; paternal grandparents Russell and Barbara (Crain) Gort of Newaygo, MI; paternal grandfather William M. Beech of Byron Center, MI; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins. Preceding her in death are her sisters Gwendolyn Willow Gort (2017) Gabrielle Sophia Gort (2002), her maternal grandfather, Juan Nicolas Papaleo (2017), and her paternal grandmother, Cynthia Lynn Beech (2007). A Celebration of Life will be planned for 2018. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be sent to the Fairview Youth Grief Services to support Camp Erin-Twin Cities (a grief camp Violet attended and will continue to attend) https://www.fairview.org/our-community-commitment/youth-grief-services/support-us. The Canale-Gwinn Funeral Home is assisting the family where memories may be shared at canalefuneral.com
