Tribute & Message From The Family

Greg “LABO” LaBonte, 56, of Marquette, was taken from us way too soon on Saturday, September 16, 2017 while roaming the great north woods on his ATV. Greg was born on March 22, 1961 in Marquette, son of Shirley Rasmussen LaBonte and the late Bernard R.W. LaBonte. He graduated class of 1979, Marquette Senior High School and earned an Associate’s Degree from Michigan Technological University in 1982. Greg spent the first ten years of his career at Con Ed Nuclear Power Plant in LaSalle County, Illinois. He returned to Marquette in 1992 where he was employed by the Presque Isle Power Plant as an Electronics and Control Technician. Peregrine Falcon Recovery Program at WE Energies know him well from his volunteer service. He enjoyed participating in the Thursday Night Ski League racing for Team U-Haul at Marquette Mountain and also the Two Track Jeep Club. The Noquemanon ski race was one of his annual projects, manning LABO’s Corner “refreshment station” with a bonfire and many friends cheering on the racers. He was actively involved in the maintenance and care of LaBonte Park at Presque Isle. Hunting and fishing were his passions, and he was a member of U.P. Whitetails and Commemorative Bucks of Michigan. Greg is survived by his loving mother, Shirley LaBonte of Marquette; three sisters, Bernadette (Pat) Wallace and Julie (Steve) Peterson, both of Marquette, Mary (Scott) Anderson of Novi; a brother, Tim (Donna) LaBonte of Trout Creek; fiancé, Beth Krznarich and her daughter, Danielle VanDreel of Marquette; nieces and nephews, Patrick, Gavin, Natalie, Andrea, Kristi, and Stacy. Also surviving are aunts and uncles, Edward and Mary Rasmussen and Pavie Donnelly. The LaBonte family will greet relatives and friends on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home in Marquette. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber and Rev. David VanKley officiating. A luncheon will take place in the funeral home immediately following the service. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to consider the Bay Cliff Health Camp, PO Box 310, Big Bay, MI, 49808 or UPAWS, PO Box 968, Marquette, MI 49855 in Greg’s memory. Condolence & Memory Journal

My mother was Katherine LaBonte. She was born and raised in Marquette, Michigan. My grandparents were Ziel and Emma LaBonte. They lived, worked and raised their family in Marquette. I was searching for information about LaBonte Park and saw the obituary. I am not sure if Greg LaBonte is a relative, but he sounds like an interesting person.

Our thoughts and prayers to the LaBonte Family. We can to IL from WI around the same time Greg came from MI and were part of the transplant family that worked at LaSalle Station. We were so blessed to know Greg he was kind and had the biggest heart. He was always available to lend a hand to his friends. Greg played a lot of sheepshead at our kitchen table after many midnight shifts. So glad we got a chance to meet up with him 3 years ago and spend an evening reminiscing. He will live forever in our hearts.

So sorry to hear of Greg's passing. He was one of the few guys at LaSalle that was a car nut like me. I have often wondered how life turned out for him.

I am very sad to learn of Greg's passing. I will always be able to reflect on good memories of fun times from time spent with Greg. We "flatlanders" tried to keep him, but ultimately his family bonds and the love of the north woods took him back home. May he rest with God and may God be with his family.

Such a heartbreaking loss. So many rich childhood memories. Greg was family, we grew up together trick or treating, playing childhood outdoor games, exploring the nearby parks, and the railroad near the Lake. He was always kind, ready to lend a shoulder or ear. From elementary school on he was just a rock solid good person! After our school years, there were often long stretches between our visits but they always felt like a homecoming. Greg left a legacy of kindness. You will be missed my friend. Prayers and hugs to Shirley, Bernadette, Julie, Mary, and Tim and their families. -

It was a sad moment when I learned of Greg's passing. Him and became great friends in grade school Parkview and even though people go different directions in life, you don't forget your rooted friends from your childhood. My deepest sympathy to Greg's family and loved ones.

Dear LaBonte family,
I am so saddened to hear of Greg's passing. Greg was just one-year younger than me so I felt a close friendship with Greg ever since we rode our pedal bikes in a parade in Marquette when we were very young. I wish we could have lived closer to each other growing up and as adults as I would have really enjoyed spending more time with Greg.
Love and prayers to all of you from Arizona,
Bob Camps and family
