Tribute & Message From The Family

Cal “Sweede” Zorza, 84, of Marquette, died Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit with is loving family at his side. Cal was born on January 4, 1933 in Marquette, one of 13 children born to Angelo and Matilda (Pantti) Zorza and was a lifelong Marquette resident. For several years, Cal managed the Miracle Market on Third Street before opening Cals’ Party store in South Marquette in 1970. Cal’s greatest joy was taking care of people and the store allowed him to take care of so many. His family helped support the business in one way or another especially Joel who took over the business in 2002 and Sharon whose cooking and personality continue the tradition of taking care of the customers using “Cal Care.” Outside of his work, Cal greatly enjoyed being outdoors working with lumber and wood as well as spending time at his camp. His greatest joy however was taking care of his family especially “his girl.” He is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Joan Gregorich; seven children, Lynn L’Huillier of Marquette, Sharon VanWormer of Marquette, Gregory (Kathy) Zorza of Gwinn, Joel (Gail) Zorza of Marquette, Bonnie (Bill) McCabe of Marquette, David (Mindy) Zorza of Marquette, and Chris (Elizabeth) Zorza of Gladstone; three brothers, Paul (Lillyann) Zorza, Tom (Mary) Zorza and Angelo (Sue) Zorza, Jr., all of Marquette; also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold, Ken, Marvin, Gerald, Daniel, Robert, and Arnold Zorza; two sisters, Geraldine Thibodeau and Carol Sherman; also a son-in-law, Vern L’Huillier and great grandson, Peyton McCabe. A private family graveside service will take place at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to UPAWS, PO Box 968, Marquette, MI 49855 or to the Bay Cliff Health Camp, PO Box 310, Big Bay, MI 49808 in Cal’s memory. The Canale-Tonella Funeral Home is assisting the family where memories may be shared at canalefuneral.com.

Although I didn't personally know Cal as an adult, my fondest memories of him are how funny and nice he was whenever I would go into the party store as a child. He never failed to make me laugh. I was there just about everyday to browse through the candy section, knowing what was there but never being able to decide which piece of candy to buy. My thoughts are with his family, with special hugs to Chris and Heidi. Heaven gained another special angel to watch over all of you. Much love and peace. ????

Chris, Boo, Nick and Katie, We are SO sorry for your loss. Only met your dad once, but have heard what a true "gentle man" he was. How fortunate you were to have such a great dad and grandpa and that you were able to spend so much time with him. We know he had to have been a good dad since he raised such a great son. We also know how much your heart aches and wish we could take some of your pain. Know you are in our thoughts and prayers - always! Love you guys.

Dear Joan, Our heartfelt condolences to you and all of Cal's family. Renting one of your apartments holds fond memories for us...getting to know you and Cal and it being our daughter's first home. It was a fun visit just going upstairs to pay the rent! We bought a house and moved out of the apartment, but many times over the years we've said "maybe we should've stayed at Cal & Joan's!" You two were the greatest landlords EVER! Our thoughts are with you at this sad time, and always. Jeff, Lorene & Jill Selesky

My sincere condolences to the Zorza family. As far back as I can remember, there was always Cal. I remember going to Cal's with my dad as a child, and Cal stuffing quarters in pockets for the arcade. Cal's was always a stop when I would come home on military leave, had to get a pasty. Cal and I would talk for awhile, and when I would try to pay, he would always say " I'll just put it on your dad's tab, and be safe." Cal was a good man, always kind and generous. Cal, you will be missed. You, and your family will be in my prayers.

Another Zorza Icon gone. I remember living on College Ave when Uncle Cal worked at the Miracle Market. I was maybe four, and remember him wearing a long white apron and him patting my head and watching me cross the street with whatever small something my mom forgot and needed for cooking. He always had a huge smile on his face. I always boast about Uncle Cal's store. He really is legendary and I'm sure will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and big smile. I send my love and prayers to the whole Zorza family in this sad time.

Cal: We will never forget the kindness and support that you offered to Mark, Matthew, James and I. You were so kind to us. I remember a snow storm when Matthew was a baby and I got called into work. I had to leave my baby with my neighbors in that old apartment on Genesee St. Since the milk supply got called into work, Cal kept the store open so the neighbors could pick up formula and diapers. I remember visiting you at deer camp, when Mark and I were really dirty and you gave us beers and put us in the sauna. So many memories. So many parties. So many trips to the store. We always felt like we were part of your extended family and we were so appreciative. You were well loved and will be sorely missed. Peace and blessings to you and your whole family.
